Southern California Building Explosion: 1 Dead, 3 Hurt

A woman was killed and three others were injured in an explosion that rocked a medical office building in Southern California on Tuesday.

The explosion happened at an office building undergoing renovation in Aliso Viejo, about 50 miles south of Los Angeles, and blew the siding off the walls, exposing insulation and framing. The incident happened at approximately 1:10PM (Pacific Time).

Capt. Tony Bommarito, a spokesperson for the Orange County Fire Authority, said that at least one woman died and three others were injured inside the building.

The woman who was killed inside the building was “in close proximity” to the explosion, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department Cmdr. Dave Sawyer.

Officials initially believed a car smashing into the building was one of the probable causes for the explosion. Later, the cause of the blast was determined to be an explosive device hidden in a package that was addressed to a specific person in the office.

There were no reported injuries or casualties among the children in the daycare across the street. Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies evacuated the daycare.

Explosion Being Investigated

Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives were present at the explosion site Tuesday night.

Just a couple of months ago, Texas was rocked by explosions made by Mark Anthony Conditt, the Austin serial bomber. Whether the Southern California explosion was intentional or not, we urge you to be vigilant and to stay safe.
